HBO stars stand silent for Rock the Vote campaign

A band of HBO stars — including Sarah Jessica Parker, Lena Dunham and Maggie Gyllenhaal — is speaking out ahead of the midterm elections — by staying silent.

“Westworld’s” Ed Harris, “Veep’s” Tony Hale, Anthony Carrigan from “Barry,” “Insecure’s” Yvonne Orji and “Crashing’s” Pete Holmes are among the group of celebrities from the premium cable network seen standing silently as they face the camera in a PSA released Tuesday.

{mosads}A message at the end of the minute-long clip reads simply, “Right now, there’s only one voice that needs to be heard. Yours.”

The video, produced by Rock the Vote and HBO, was unveiled the same day the two organizations announced the launch of a joint voter registration campaign.

“The right to vote is one of the most ignored gifts of our democracy,” Dennis Williams, HBO’s senior vice president of corporate social responsibility, told ITK in a statement. “At HBO, we often have programs that give voice to the underrepresented. This partnership with Rock the Vote is us encouraging you to use your voice so that you are heard.”

“There needs to be a heightened awareness of the importance of all American voices, especially those of young people,” Rock the Vote president Carolyn DeWitt said. “By voting, these voices can be put to real use.”

ITK hears the performers and entertainers featured in the campaign — including “Game of Thrones” writer George R.R. Martin, “Silicon Valley’s” Kumail Nanjiani, Jeffrey Wright, Henry Winkler and Thomas Middleditch, among others — will also post their own get-out-the-vote videos, featuring them saying nothing, on their social media channels.

HBO is also partnering with Rock the Vote for a college ambassador program in the months before the Nov. 6 midterms, running voter registration drives at campuses across the country.
