Michael Jordan gives away Thanksgiving meals to families affected by Hurricane Florence

NBA legend Michael Jordan gave away Thanksgiving meals on Tuesday in his hometown of Wilmington, N.C., to help families affected by Hurricane Florence.

The basketball star created a station at a local Lowe’s store to give away 500 prepackaged meals, WECT 6 News reported.

Jordan, who is the majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, also reportedly stopped by the same Boys and Girls Club he used to visit as a kid.

“If I bring a smile to their faces, especially during this time, I’m willing to do that, without a doubt,” said Jordan.

He handed out 200 pairs of his signature Air Jordan shoes and care packages at the children’s center, the Wilmington TV station noted.

“To me, if I can use this to inspire them, just by giving them this start, great,” said Jordan. “If it helps them educationally, if it helps from a motivational standpoint, obviously it’s Thanksgiving, to me that’s a start, because that’s where you’re going to have to rebuild is from a start.”

Lowe’s also announced that it would donate $100,000 to the center to help with renovations.

The visit to Wilmington follows Jordan’s $2 million donation to the American Red Cross and the Foundation For The Carolinas’ Hurricane Florence Response Fund following September’s storm.

The Category 1 storm made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, N.C.

The first two confirmed deaths connected to the storm were a mother and infant who were killed when a tree fell on their Wilmington house.
