Sanders agrees Cardi B should be a politician: ‘It would be great’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) backed the notion of rapper Cardi B entering politics, telling TMZ “it would be great” if the star, a high-profile supporter, made good on her stated ambition.

“Cardi B is deeply concerned about what’s happening in the country,” Sanders told the publication. “She knows what it’s like to live in poverty and struggle, and it would be great for her to bring that experience to politics.”

Sanders made the comment after Cardi B tweeted on Sunday, “I think I want to be a politician.”

The rapper, born Belcalis Almánzar, said in a follow-up tweet that she had increasingly considered entering politics in light of ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran that briefly sparked anxieties about a war between the nations after Tehran launched missiles on an Iraqi airbase housing U.S. troops in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

“How are you trying to go against a country and possibly start a war when this country lacks patriotism? I barely see people claiming they LOVE being American,” she tweeted.

Cardi B, who has endorsed Sanders in his 2020 presidential bid after also backing his 2016 bid, has been one of Sanders’s highest-profile celebrity supporters and even conducted a sit-down interview with the Vermont senator last summer.

Sanders said he was “very appreciative” of the Grammy winner’s support in July, telling MSNBC’s Ali Velshi she was “very sharp and understands a lot about politics and a lot about history.”
