Meghan Markle is lauding the “quiet heroes” who have helped others during the coronavirus pandemic, saying they stepped up in a year that has been “universally challenging for everyone.”
“Back in March, the COVID crisis hit hard, and overnight, everything seemed to change,” the duchess of Sussex said during an appearance on Sunday’s annual “CNN Heroes” special.
“For many families, the impact of the pandemic has been catastrophic. And far too many were faced with a heartbreaking question: How am I going to put food on the table for my family?” the 39-year-old former American actress said.
“In the face of this devastating reality,” Markle said the world witnessed “the power of the human spirit and the remarkable ways that communities respond in challenging times.”
“We saw the good in people, in our neighbors and in entire communities coming together to say they would not stand by while our neighbors went hungry,” Markle, who married Britain’s Prince Harry in 2018, said.
Markle and her husband left their full-time work at the House of Windsor earlier this year and moved from Britain to California. The surprise “Heroes” remarks marked Markle’s first public appearance since she revealed last month in a New York Times op-ed that she suffered a miscarriage in July when she was pregnant with her second child.
“These moments reminded so many that they’re cared for. Tonight we’re celebrating these quiet heroes,” Markle said Sunday during the pre-taped segment. “They showed us, all of us, that even in the darkest times, when we come together, we have the power to remind someone else that there is hope and that we will be OK.”
