The ‘Just Say No’ Party

Some of the saddest political figures in history are the small group of Republicans — led by Gov. Tom Dewey, Sen. Robert Taft and Sen. Arthur Vandenberg — who opposed President Roosevelt’s New Deal. They were so narrow-minded they didn’t understand how badly the country was hurting, nor how boldly the government had to act to get things back on track.

Flash forward. Unfortunately, most Senate Republicans today aren’t any brighter. Take mental midgets Mitch McConnell (Ky.), John McCain (Ariz.), John Cornyn (Texas), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas) and others. They don’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain.

And, when it comes to turning this economy around, they are totally clueless. Having been part of the team that destroyed the economy, they now stand on the sidelines and refuse to help fix it. They’ve put forth no ideas of their own. They only say no to anything proposed by President Obama.

There are times in our history that demand great leadership. This is one of them. But we’re not seeing it from the Republican Party.

When this economy does finally turn around, let all Americans remember that — except for Sens. Arlen Specter (Pa.), Susan Collins (Maine) and Olympia Snowe (Maine) — Republicans did nothing to help.
