Public Plan Option Wins by Landslide
The votes are in and counted, and the winner is …
No, I’m not talking about the election in Iran. I’m talking about the latest New York Times/CBS poll on healthcare. Which contains some very interesting results.
Does our existing healthcare system need fixing? Eighty-five percent of Americans say yes!
Which party do you trust to do the job? Fifty-seven percent say the Democratic Party. Only 18 percent trust Republicans.
Would you be willing to pay more in taxes in order to make sure that every American has health insurance? Almost six out of 10 say yes.
But here’s the biggest news: What about a public plan option to compete with private insurance plans, which President Obama insists must be part of any healthcare reform legislation?
Private insurance companies oppose it. The American Medical Association opposes it. Republican senators oppose it. Even some Democratic senators oppose it. But an astounding 72 percent of Americans support it!
So what are we waiting for? And what are so many senators afraid of? The American people have spoken. Before leaving for summer recess, Congress should pass healthcare reform legislation giving Americans the option of choosing a public plan like Medicare. If private insurance companies can’t compete, they deserve to go out of business.
The votes are in. The public plan option won.
