Democracy in Danger
Now that we’ve witnessed the rise of socialism in the United States with the bank bailout, the auto bailout and more bailouts and handouts to come, we can put a fork in democracy, too.
With Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) caught trying to sell President-elect Obama’s U.S. Senate seat and no special election set as the arrested governor tries to appoint Obama’s successor, New York Gov. David Paterson (D) geared up to appoint Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg to Hillary Clinton’s vacated seat (now that he is convinced Kennedy Schlossberg will be worth millions of fundraising dollars to him and is ignoring the fact that she has no experience), and satirist Al Franken (D) all but stealing a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota by counting some votes (for him) twice and not counting others, I think it’s safe to say that democracy in America is dying. It is also correct that it’s Democrats doing the killing.
It took the Republican Party at least a dozen years to accumulate the ethics violations that eventually led to losses in both chambers in Congress and the White House, and most of those were of the rather icky, “personal” kind. But the Democrats have managed to out-perform Republicans on the sleaze scale in just a few short weeks.
President-elect Obama may think he’s shined his halo by kicking Bill Richardson off his Cabinet lineup for being a “distraction” in yet another pay-to-play scandal, but other players in the Democratic Party seem to feel pretty comfortable and confident selling out democracy right under Obama’s nose. One can only conclude they know he won’t stand up for the American people by standing up to them.
