What’s wrong with the politics of color?

Politico writes, “Reed savaged Davis as a political opportunist who opposed the [health reform] bill to curry favor with the state’s conservative-leaning white majority.

“Davis’s vote showed that ‘because he is now running for governor, he is looking out for himself and not the people,’ Reed wrote. He added: ‘You cannot curse Bubba and Cooter, Big Man and June Bug in the daytime and beg them at night.’ ”

Can you actually believe this ignorance?

Proponents of this governing style want their leaders to see color first and move policies based on that priority alone. To do otherwise, they argue, is tantamount to allowing racism to get a free pass, because by not actively promoting one minority (in this instance, American blacks) you are de facto ignoring them. Sins of omission, brothers and sisters, not commission. What twisted and outdated logic!

Such a brazen and unapologetic stance says more about Reed’s backwards and outwardly racist views than about Davis. Should a black elected official have free rein and license to enact policies that benefited only the black community, no matter the burdens and obligations they placed on the body electorate writ large? Isn’t that what Reed and proponents are saying?

Does Reed believe white Alabamians will look the other way because of some deeply harbored generational guilt? Please.

The problem with such foolish logic is there is no end.

The election of President Barack Obama charted a new course and opened doors for black leaders like Davis to reach across racial lines and be a president or governor for all citizens.

Reed would have us as a country turn back that progress in the name of what — restitution that the white man would certainly understand and begrudgingly allow? Ridiculous.

Rep. Davis may have his own problems with a liberal orthodoxy that would sour most Alabamians, but his color-blind agenda is refreshing in the Deep South. Thank God that the Joe Reeds of this country are a dying school of thought!
