Counting Votes

What’s with us? Report after report, in state after state, describes the states’ problems with voting. This country put a man on the moon, leads the world in the information-gathering age and is the finest democracy in world history, and we can’t perfect our election system?

Forget systemic flaws like the Electoral College, or the disproportionate role of money in the election process, serious subjects to be discussed at another time. We can’t seem to figure out an expeditious method for collecting and recording votes! One would have surmised that after the debacle of 2000, we’d have learned our lesson. It seems not.

So, as we approach a national election that most Americans view as critically important, where the number of registrations is record-breaking, we hear, repeatedly, of snafus at the voting booths that make cynics mutter. Lawyers are gathering on behalf of the presidential candidates to challenge the expected flaws, and we are over a week away from the election.
