Obama’s Unity Bounce

The McCain campaign is facing down a nearly impossible task: trying to get 270 electoral votes in November.

The state that delivered Bush the election in 2004, Ohio, isn’t shaping up to be McCain Country. “Barack Obama appears to be enjoying a strong unity bounce in Ohio,” says Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling (PPP). “He begins the general-election campaign in a strong position in the state.”

PPP gives Obama an 11-point lead over McCain, which is way beyond the margin of error. Other states that have been solidly GOP for years appear to be in range for Obama, including Virginia (where Rasmussen gives Obama a slim lead) and North Carolina. Both Iowa and Colorado, which Bush won in ’04, don’t even appear competitive for McCain.

Are we headed toward a major party realignment? The future looks bright.
