Obama Makes it Eight in a Row

You gotta admit, the guy’s on a roll. Chalk up three more wins for Barack Obama: substantial wins in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. On top of big wins over the weekend in Washington, Nebraska, Louisiana, Maine and the Virgin Islands.

That makes eight straight wins for the senator from Illinois — and eight straight losses for the senator from New York. The Democratic primary’s still far from over, but, for now, Obama’s clearly the front-runner. And Clinton’s suddenly the underdog.

What happens next? There are two more primaries on Feb. 19, Wisconsin and Hawaii, which Obama’s also expected to win. That’ll make 10 straight. Then comes March 4 and Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont. Those four states, especially Texas and Ohio, are Clinton’s firewall, says her campaign. That’s when Hillary Clinton will come charging back. Which could happen — but which is also a lot easier said than done. If he does, indeed, win 10 straight, Obama will be hard to stop.

Clinton, in effect, has been forced by the primary schedule to adopt the Rudy Giuliani strategy. He made Florida his firewall and, when he lost it, he was out of the race. If Hillary Clinton loses either Texas or Ohio, she’ll be out of the race, too.
