Seriously, no matter how hard Mitch McConnell tries, by no stretch of the imagination can Obama be called a liberal. Just look at his record. Yes, he’s more “liberal” than George W. Bush, but he’s hardly a confirmed lefty.
After all, he refused even to consider single-payer healthcare. He dumped the public plan option from his healthcare reform bill. He continued and expanded George Bush’s bailout of Wall Street banks. And, instead of ending them, as he promised, he extended George Bush’s tax cuts to the very wealthiest of Americans.
{mosads}That’s not the record of a wide-eyed liberal. That’s the record of someone in the center, or to the right of center.
Republicans totally misrepresent the message of the midterm elections. It’s not that Obama needs to move to the center. It’s that he must do even more to put Americans back to work and get our economy moving again. His challenge, in other words, is not to buy into the do-nothing Republican agenda — but to fight it with his own aggressive job-creating agenda, even if it means spending more money.
