GOPers tweet disagreement with new Gitmo proposal

Two Republican lawmakers took to Twitter on Sunday night to preemptively reject the possibility of Guantanamo Bay prisoners being transferred to new facilities in their home states. Yesterday, the AP reported the Obama administration drafted a proposal to place the detainees in new prisons in the lower 48 states.

The administration chose Fort Leavenworth, Kan. and an aging state prison in Michigan as potential locations for the detention center.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) and Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) strongly opposed the plan, tweeting on Sunday:

Press reports indicate President considering Mich as transfer possibility for Gitmo detainees. Levin/Stupak may be supportive. Bad idea!

If press reports on moving Gitmo detainees to Mich are accurate my answer is no. I will do everything possible to stop this.

“This is a bad idea chasing after another bad idea on a hurry up timeline,” said Brownback in the linked statement.

The White House has not yet approved the proposal, but it is already meeting strong resistance from the GOP. A spokesman for House Minority John Boehner (R-Ohio) also said “the administration is going to face a severe public backlash unless it shelves this plan and goes back to the drawing board.”
