Wheelchair user and service dog co-star in high school production of The Wizard of Oz
A student who uses a wheelchair will co-star with her service dog in her New Jersey high school’s production of “The Wizard of Oz,” according to NBC4.
Erin Bischoff, a senior at Hasbrouck Heights High School, has been cast as Dorothy in the school’s stage production, while her service dog has been cast as Toto, according to the outlet. Bischoff uses a wheelchair due to osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease.
{mosads}”It’s just like any other student who’s going out there,” Bischoff said, according to NBC4, who said that while the production marked her first role, “it isn’t really a big deal at all.”
“It’s more about acceptance — you just treat everyone the same,” she told the station. “There’s really no differences.”
“You talk about true grit? She has grit, in every bone of her body, she really does, and she’s a strong young woman,” Hasbrouck Heights High School Principal Linda Simmons told the outlet.
