Police release men held in connection with journalist’s death in Northern Ireland
Police in Northern Ireland have released two teens held in connection with the death of journalist Lyra McKee, according to NBC News.
The unidentified men, aged 18 and 19, were released without charge Sunday after their arrest the day before, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
McKee was shot dead Thursday while covering a riot in Derry. Authorities believe the New Irish Republican Army, a splinter group that rejects the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, is responsible.
{mosads}“The individuals responsible for Lyra’s murder continue to hide in the shadows, attempting to justify their actions to each other. They have shown no courage to offer any explanation directly to Lyra’s family,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said in a statement. “Lyra’s murder was not just an attack on Lyra – it was an attack on the fabric of the community. Lyra’s killers have succeeded only in uniting the entire community in condemnation.”
Murphy pleaded for any witnesses with cell phone footage that could help police investigate the murder to come forward.
