Florida lawmaker: Castro’s death lifts ‘psychological burden’

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) said Monday that the death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro eliminated a “psychological burden” for many people.

{mosads}“It’s not so much that someone died, but that this psychological — this heavy, psychological burden, this cloud, has finally been lifted,” Curbelo said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Curbelo, who is of Cuban descent, said his grandfather was imprisoned by Castro’s regime and that his grandfather’s brother was executed without a trial.

When asked how he feels about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments about Castro, Curbelo called them “very painful” and “very sad.”

Trudeau praised Castro in a statement following his death, calling Castro a “remarkable leader.”

“That’s why I think it’s incumbent upon us to make sure the truth gets out, because that’s what Fidel Castro and his government have also been very good at throughout the years: at propaganda, at selling a lie, about who he is, about who he was — in this case about what the Cuban Revolution was,” Curbelo added.
