The Hill’s Changemakers: Trey Yingst, Fox News correspondent
Fox News reporter Trey Yingst has had a busy year covering some of the bloodiest overseas conflicts in recent memory.
Fox’s top foreign correspondent, Yingst has reported from Ukraine as Russia continues to wage war on the country and from Israel in the wake of last year’s attack by Hamas.
“It’s a really delicate story,” Yingst told The Hill of covering the Israeli-Hamas war. “If it were up to me, this wouldn’t happen, but because it did, my job is to ensure we are covering it fairly and objectively.”
Fox News saw a spike in viewership in the months since the attack as the conflict dominated American news cycles in the run up to the 2024 presidential election.
“Very quickly an audience can be overwhelmed just by the graphic nature of war,” Yingst says. “I’m constantly thinking to myself how can I humanize the people involved here.”
He lists greater access to Gaza for Western media outlets as among the priorities he plans to advocate for in 2025, with fighting in the region expected to intensify in the coming months.
“Oftentimes we have to rely on the brave Palestinian journalists who are risking their lives to get sound bites and information from inside Gaza,” he said. “It’s different when you have first had access on the ground. We’re getting creative in our storytelling.”
Yingst was in Ukraine the night the Russians invaded and spent nearly 200 days on the ground reporting on the ensuing war. He was also in Afghanistan after the U.S. pulled troops out of the region and the Taliban took over.
“I’ve reported from some of the most dangerous places in the world,” he said. “For us, safety is the number one priority. The bottom line is war is unpredictable.”
