Story at a glance

  • The movie “Contagion,” which featured a global pandemic, saw a resurgence in popularity after the coronavirus outbreak.
  • During a recent podcast interview, Soderbergh said he and the original writer are working on a “philosophical’ sequel.
  • Warner Bros. has not confirmed the sequel but has shown previous interest.

The visionary director behind “Contagion” didn’t exactly see the coronavirus pandemic coming. But he had been washing his hands more often, he told Business Insider at the time.

“This all could have been foretold and planned for if you had people who believe in science. We’re in an era where science is routinely debunked and now we need only science. Had the government embraced science as it had in the past, arguably, we might have been better prepared,” Steven Soderburg told Insider.

While it didn’t get everything right, the 2011 movie about a global pandemic saw a resurgence at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak. At one point, the title even made it into the top 10 rentals on iTunes and came in second only to the “Harry Potter” franchise as the most in-demand title in the Warner Bros. catalog.

Now, Soderbergh is working with writer Scott Z. Burns on a “philosophical” sequel, according to an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.

“I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to ‘Contagion,’ but in a different context,” he told host Josh Horowitz. “You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired, but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ We have been working on that. We should probably hot-foot it a little bit.”

Even with the development of a coronavirus vaccine, the pandemic shows no immediate signs of coming to an end, so it looks like the two will have some time.
