Facebook announced its plans on Monday to create 10,000 high-skill jobs across the European Union over a five year period to develop CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of a “metaverse.”

“Working with others, we’re developing what is often referred to as the metaverse — a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual and augmented reality,” the company wrote in a blog post

“At its heart is the idea that by creating a greater sense of “virtual presence”, interacting online can become much closer to the experience of interacting in person,” the post continued.

Zuckerberg described his vision to The Verge in July, saying that one “can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet” where instead of merely viewing content, a person is in it.

“And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn’t necessarily do on a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness,” Zuckerberg said.

The social media giant added on Monday that the European Union is hugely important in the company’s success, noting also that its investment in the EU reflects a “vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of European tech talent.”

A Facebook spokesperson told Insider that the company would target Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, and Ireland for hiring.
