On Saturday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) acknowledged that the rising number of new COVID-19 cases in the state cannot be explained only by an increase in testing.
“Even with the testing increasing or being flat, the number of people testing positive is accelerating faster than that,” DeSantis told reporters during a news conference at the state capitol, according to Politico. “You know that’s evidence that there’s transmission within those communities.”
Last week, when Florida hit nearly 2,800 COVID-19 cases in a day, DeSantis attributed the increase to testing among migrant farm workers and low-income communities.
Cases in Florida began climbing roughly a month after the state began reopening in early May.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R) Sunday attributed the spike in cases to the reopening of restaurants and lack of social distancing.
“When we started opening up our restaurants, unfortunately I think society started to think that we were signaling the all clear,” Suarez said during a news conference Sunday according to WPLG.
DeSantis meanwhile suggested younger adults may be flouting social distancing measures.
“I think that we’ve started to see some erosion on social distancing from probably some of the younger population,” DeSantis said, according to NBC6.
DeSantis, however, dismissed the idea of shutting the state down again due to the uptick in cases.
Modeling from researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania says Florida is on track to becoming the next large epicenter for the outbreak in the U.S.
Researchers said the state has “all the markings of the next large epicenter of coronavirus transmission,” and risks being the “worst it has ever been,” CNN reports.
The U.S. has tallied nearly 2.3 million coronavirus cases with more than 120,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
