Elon Musk’s startup The Boring Company was given the greenlight by local officials this week to move forward with plans to construct an underground tunnel system under Las Vegas.
The Boring Company’s transport system involves moving commuters through underground tunnels in Tesla vehicles. Recently, the company completed construction of a 1.7-mile network of tunnels that shuttles people across the Las Vegas Convention Center.
On Wednesday, Clark County officials approved initial plans to expand the system, dubbed the “Vegas Loop,” to a 29-mile route with 51 stations.
The vehicle tunnels would allow passengers to catch rides to and from hotel casinos on the strip, the city’s new football stadium, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the convention center. Riders will be able to jump in a Tesla and travel directly to a specific station without stopping along the way.

Vegas Loop is expanding – 29 miles and 51 stations!
Thanks to the Clark County team for the great partnership and to the Commissioners for unanimous approval. https://t.co/KrfF5SUsxq— The Boring Company (@boringcompany) October 20, 2021
Officials approved a special use permit and 50-year franchise agreement with The Boring Company, setting the stage for the permitting process to start. Each of the planned 51 stops will require separate land use permits before being constructed, according to The Las Vegas Journal Review.
County officials said the system is expected to transport as many as 57,000 passengers per hour once it’s operational. Initial plans include opening five to 10 stations within the first six months after construction begins. Some 15 to 20 stations would be added each year, according to the news outlet.
The Boring Company has offered the tunnel system as a solution for congested city traffic.
“Tunnels minimize usage of valuable surface land and do not conflict with existing transportation systems. A large network of tunnels can alleviate congestion in any city; no matter how large a city grows, more levels of tunnels can be added,” the company says on its website.
