On the heels of news surrounding Facebook’s push into the “metaverse,” it’s worth noting that rival Microsoft has its own ambitions in the space. Microsoft is developing its own metaverse using its HoloLens technology, the company’s virtual and augmented reality tool, with Microsoft Teams, its workplace communication application.
As Changing America previously reported, the metaverse concept is “a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual and augmented reality,” according to Facebook.
Now, Microsoft, which has experience in launching an avatar system, advanced AI, body motion detection, and creating immersive experiences, will attempt to make Teams meetings as interactive if they were taking place in the real world, using its platform called Mesh, The Verge reported.
The application, which is slated for a mid-2022 update, is hoped to make meetings more interactive and interesting.
“We got hit by meeting fatigue in the virtual world,” Nicole Herskowitz, general manager for Microsoft Teams, told The Verge. “After 30 or 40 minutes max in a meeting, it was very hard to stay engaged and focused.”
With animating 2D and 3D meetings, a VR headset is not required to enjoy the new features Mesh has to offer.
The new Teams feature will enable interactive and collaborative meetings and socialization with colleagues such as playing games or working on applications together.
Of course, Mesh works best with a headset.
