Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) is calling for an investigation into an allegation that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) sexually harassed one of his former aides for several years while she worked in his office.

The statement from Stefanik — who gained national attention as an ally for President Trump while defending him during the impeachment hearings — came after Lindsey Boylan said the governor sexually harassed her for years and that numerous people saw it take place. Boylan is currently a candidate for Manhattan borough president and served as deputy secretary for economic development and special adviser to Cuomo from 2015 to 2018.
“I could never anticipate what to expect: would I be grilled on my work (which was very good) or harassed about my looks. Or would it be both in the same conversation? This was the way for years” Boylan tweeted Sunday.
“I’m angry to be put in this situation at all. That because I am a woman, I can work hard my whole life to better myself and help others and yet still fall victim as countless women over generations have. Mostly silently,” Boylan tweeted.
Cuomo on Monday swiftly denied the allegations.
“On the tweets, I totally respect a woman’s right — fought for a woman’s right to express any concern, any issue she has in the workplace. I support that. But the tweets were simply not true,” Cuomo said when asked about Boylan’s allegations by reporters at a news briefing Monday.
Stefanik did not specify who would head the independent investigation, and it’s not clear if Boylan would participate.
