- There has been a 54 percent increase in reported anti-Asian hate crimes in a year span.
- The plurality of the victims are people who identify as Chinese.

The number of reported anti-Asian hate incidents have more than doubled in a span of one year, according to Stop AAPI Hate, a national coalition aimed at addressing anti-Asian American discrimination. (AAPI stands for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders).

The 54 percent annual increase in cases, as well as the 4,193 incidents that occurred in 2020 and the 2,410 that occurred in 2021, demonstrates the urgency to bring awareness to the wave of hate incidents happening in America, the group said.
Those who identify as Chinese were victims in around 44 percent of the hate incidents. Koreans, Filipinos and Vietnamese made up about 17, 9 and 8 percent, respectively.
One of the most well known attacks against Asian Americans took place on March 16, 2021 when eight people were fatally shot at three Atlanta spas.
Recently the Asian American Foundation was launched to boost advocacy efforts, including with a TV special starring R&B singer Jhené Aiko, rapper Saweetie and rock legend Sting called “See Us Unite for Change — The Asian American Foundation in service of the AAPI Community.”
The program is scheduled to air on May 21 on channels such as MTV, BET, VH1, Comedy Central and also on Facebook Watch.
