Vandals in Boise, Idaho, Friday defaced tunnel walls near the city’s Anne Frank memorial with antisemitic graffiti, including Swastikas, on the last day of Hanukkah.

The Boise Police Department (BPD) told KIVI they were notified Saturday morning that three tunnels near the memorial — the only Anne Frank memorial in the U.S. — contained the hateful graffiti, which also targeted other minority groups.

“We recognize the significance of this being the last Saturday of Hanukkah and we are reaching out to Jewish leaders in our community to let them know we will not stand for such hateful and abhorrent behavior in our city,” BPD Chief Ryan Lee said on the department’s Twitter account.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said in a statement the graffiti is a “literal and figurative stain” on the community while adding that it “will not be tolerated.”

“Hate speech is reprehensible. It is not who we are as a city and is not part of our shared values,” she added. “I invite all good people of Boise to stand with me, as I stand with our Jewish neighbors, to rebuke this hate.”

BPD said the graffiti was quickly painted over, and they are asking for any information regarding the incident.

The FBI’s annual hate crimes report revealed there were 683 anti-Jewish incidents in the U.S. in 2020.
