Only one country in the world is living up to the Paris accord to curb global warming

Story at a glance:

  • There is one country that is complying with the Paris Accord.
  • The only other countries that are coming close to reaching its goals are Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, and the U.K.
  • The U.K. is the only industrialized country to come close to reaching its emissions targets and financing clean energy for poor countries.

There is one country that is complying with the Paris Accord, and it is the smallest country within mainland Africa.

The Gambia, a smaller country surrounded by Senegal in West Africa, is on track to cut its emissions and reach the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) , The Associated Press reported.

The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 by 197 countries — almost every nation on Earth. The United States rejoined the agreement under President Biden, after former President Trump pulled the country out of the accord.

The only other countries that are coming close to reaching 1.5 degrees are according to Ifiscience: Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, and the U.K.

As Changing America previously reported, a study found that the G-7 countries, including the U.K., broke their climate commitments ahead of the summit earlier this year.

However, to the U.K.’s credit, it is the only industrialized country to come close to reaching its emissions targets and financing clean energy for poor countries, according to Climate Action Tracker (CAT).

“That momentum has not been maintained,” said report co-author Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics. “We’re running short of countries stepping up with additional emission commitments to close the gap.”
