Story at a glance

  • The poll found 44 percent of Republicans are ready to return to normal activities right now, compared to just 4 percent of Democrats.
  • Twenty-one percent of Americans overall are ready to return to normal activities right now.
  • Twelve percent of Americans said they would wait for a vaccine to become available.

The willingness of Americans to return to normal day-to-day activities if no coronavirus social distancing restrictions were in place falls along party lines, according to a new Gallup survey released Thursday.

The web-based poll found that 44 percent of Republicans say they would return to normal activities “right now” if given the chance, while just 4 percent of Democrats and 22 percent of independents say they are ready to resume their normal activities right now if there were no government restrictions.

The Republican number has increased by 19 percentage points since Gallup asked the same question earlier this month.

Among Americans overall, 21 percent said they are ready to return to normal activities right now; 36 percent say they would return to normal activities once the number of new cases of COVID-19 in their state drops significantly; 31 percent say they would return to normal life once there are no new cases in their state; and 12 percent say they will return to their day-to-day activities only once there’s a vaccine.

The findings from the poll were collected in a probability-based sample of 7,921 adults in the U.S. from the Gallup Panel. The survey was conducted by web from April 20-26.

The Trump administration’s social distancing guidelines are set to expire Friday, and several states have already begun to loosen their own restrictions.

Public health officials have warned that lifting coronavirus measures too quickly before adequate testing, isolation and contact tracing is put in place could cause a rebound in cases, further exacerbating the outbreak in the U.S.

More than 1 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the U.S. with more than 60,000 deaths.
