Story at a glance

  • A number of states have started reopening after putting statewide stay-at-home orders in place.
  • In the days since restrictions have been lifted, cases and deaths have spiked in some of these states.
  • Testing has also increased in most states around the country, which is likely to pick up more confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Public health experts have warned that reopening the country too early could potentially lead to a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak. Some of the first states to begin reopening saw spikes in coronavirus cases and deaths, including Tennessee and Texas.
