After months of selling out in grocery stores and pharmacies, Lysol has officially been recognized as the first surface cleaning product to fight COVID-19.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its approval Monday of Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist as two cleaners that are effective in warding off coronavirus infections given proper use.
The study on both disinfectant products was conducted in a clinical setting.

“EPA is committed to identifying new tools and providing accurate and up-to-date information to help the American public protect themselves and their families from the novel coronavirus,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler in a press release. “EPA’s review of products tested against this virus marks an important milestone in President Trump’s all of government approach to fighting the spread of COVID-19.”
These two products are the first to be directly tested against COVID-19 viral particles.
Bloomberg notes that this approval follows record sales growth in 2020 at the onset of the global pandemic. Lysol’s parent company, Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc, says that sales have moved up by 50 percent in North America alone, and they have had to revamp operations to keep up with demand.
Lysol Marketing Director Ferran Rousad says that other existing Lysol products are being tested for their efficacy against the coronavirus.
“Lysol is currently testing the efficacy of other disinfectant products in the brand portfolio,” Rousad told Reuters.
This approval comes as new coronavirus cases soar in the U.S., interfering with states’s reopening plans and public health goals. Johns Hopkins data notes that there are 2,939,540 confirmed cases within the U.S., the most in the world.
