Coronavirus is exploding in Michigan

Story at a glance

  • Even as vaccines are being distributed, COVID-19 cases are surging in some parts of the country.
  • In Michigan, new cases have risen rapidly in recent weeks.
  • The state reopened indoor dining and school in February.

New coronavirus cases are on the rise again, warns the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Michigan is leading the country with the highest number of daily cases on average over the last week.

Even as the state passes the one-third mark in vaccinating its residents, Michigan is reporting more than 5,600 cases a day after the state began reopening last month. Not long after students returned to classrooms, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a 30 percent increase in one week in cases connected to new or ongoing coronavirus outbreaks tied to middle and high schools.

“It is absolutely alarming,” Emily Toth Martin, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, told the New York Times. “Looking at numbers yesterday felt like a gut punch. We’re going to have to go through this surge, and all this hard work again, to get the numbers down.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) asked White House officials to send more doses to harder-hit parts of the country, including her own state, rather than strictly distributing vaccines by population, reported the Washington Post.

Earlier this month, Whitmer told CNN that the state’s strategy was to focus on administering vaccines and promoting face masks rather than reinstating restrictions.
