New study shows dogs can detect COVID-19 in under one second

A new study shows that dogs can detect COVID-19 on objects and those infected by it.

Dogs are being trained to detect the coronavirus with pinpoint accuracy, with canines being able to smell COVID-19 on clothing people have worn with up to estimated 94 percent sensitivity, meaning the dogs would correctly identify 94 out of 100 people, according to The Guardian

Compare that to lateral flow tests, also known as rapid tests, that have a sensitivity between 58 and 77 percent. The polymerase chain reaction tests are slightly more sensitive, at 97 percent, albeit much slower than trained dogs, which can take under a second.

It only takes between eight and 10 weeks to train a dog how to detect COVID-19. The study has not yet been peer reviewed.

Dogs have been trained to detect ailments such as cancers, Parkinson’s and Type 1 diabetes, and some can detect disorders as well.
