National League of Cities official Brooks Rainwater said in the premier episode of Hill.TV’s “Boundless” that 5G will ultimately help cities move beyond outdated technology.
“We need to move from technology that’s outdated from 20, 30, 40 years ago, that needs to be upgraded, to something that’s ten, 20 years in front of us,” Brooks Rainwater, director of the Center for City Solutions and Applied Research at the National League of Cities, told Hill.TV.
“We’ve got a lot of opportunity to leapfrog the technologies that are right behind us, and really go forward to where we all want to see the cities of the future be,” he added.
“We’ve got some very big infrastructure challenges. From the local government perspective, we’ve been trying to work with the federal government to pass infrastructure bills, and really get us up to speed,” he said. “I do think from the infrastructure piece, this is where cities are able to take the lead and think about how 5G is both regulated as well as implemented throughout the city sphere,” Rainwater continued. “Particularly as we are growing this, that’s where it becomes incredibly important that cities are at the table.”
