Wrestling star Kane says he’s a ‘Reagan Republican’

Wrestling star Glenn Jacobs, best known as “Kane,” told Hill.TV that he sees himself as a “Reagan Republican,” and thinks the party should get back to the former president’s ideals.

“I would consider myself a Reagan Republican,” Jacobs said. “When we use the term libertarianism that’s what Ronald Reagan said was the heart of conservatism and I believe that.”

Jacobs, who is now running for mayor of Knox County, Tenn., was referencing a quote from former President Reagan who said, “If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.”

Jacobs is running on a platform that focuses on low taxes, limited government, educational opportunities and new job growth.

Jacobs said he hopes Republicans like himself will be able to return the party to libertarian principles.

“I believe more people like me and other folks like Rand Paul are able to pull the party back in that direction,” he told Hill.TV.

Jacobs won the Republican primary in Knox County by a slim margin, but he’s seen as the favorite to win against Democratic candidate Linda Haney in the general election.

Kane said that despite his fame he hopes to be taken seriously as a contender.

“In the end, I think it’s the ideas that matter, and my ability to put those ideas in motion,” he told Hill.TV.
