Ann Coulter: Alec Baldwin is the ‘sort of person that could beat Trump’

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter said she thinks actor Alec Baldwin is the kind of high-profile candidate Democrats need to successfully take on President Trump in 2020.

In response to a question over whether there were any promising presidential Democratic candidates on the horizon, Coulter said, “None that could win the nomination.” But she floated the actor’s name as a contender.

“I actually think one of the strongest candidates if he ran would be Alec Baldwin, and I’m not joking,” Coulter told Hill.TV in an interview that aired on Monday, citing that the actor as “charming” and “very funny.”

“If he would be a blue-collar Democrat and still be himself and a celebrity – that’s the sort of person that could beat Trump,” she added.

Baldwin is one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Hollywood, and has long entertained the idea of running for public office.

In 2011, the actor considered running for mayor of New York City but later said scheduling conflicts prevented him from pursuing a candidacy.

During an interview with radio host Howard Stern in June 2018, the actor boasted that he would “absolutely win” in a race against Trump. Baldwin, who won an Emmy last year for his impersonations of the president, added that an official bid was unlikely because of his hosting commitments on the “Match Game” revival show on ABC.

Democrats have yet to coalesce around a frontrunner for 2020.
