Former federal prosecutor Joseph Moreno on Monday warned that if President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, it would only set his administration back.
“One of the president’s greatest assets is some of the people he has in key positions, that includes Rod Rosenstein,” Moreno told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.” “He’s a serious Washington, D.C., public servant.”
“He’s really seen as bipartisan, and he was overwhelmingly approved in the Senate,” he continued. “He will give an imprimatur of the authenticity of whatever Bob Mueller eventually puts out.”
“If you get rid of Rod Rosenstein, and you get rid of Jeff Sessions, and you get rid of other people that have some reputation in this town, the president will have only that much more of a harder time getting things done, and being taken seriously,” he said.
Moreno’s comments come after The New York Times reported on Friday that Rosenstein floated the idea of recording conversations with Trump, and talked about the possibility of administration officials invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
Trump left the door open to firing Rosenstein during an interview on Monday.
“I haven’t gotten all the facts, but certainly it’s being looked at in terms of what took place,” Trump told “Geraldo in Cleveland” on WTAM radio.
“If anything took place and I’ll make a determination sometime later, but I don’t have the facts,” he continued.
Trump has lashed out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the past year for recusing himself from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
