Progressive activist says Taylor Swift will energize voters

Progressive activist Igor Volsky said on Monday that Taylor Swift has the potential to energize voters after she broke her silence regarding her political beliefs.

“I think Taylor Swift speaks to a certain group of voters, and maybe energizes certain people to go out to the polls, and so I think that’s a good thing, getting people involved in politics, and you know, good for her,” Volsky, director of Guns Down America, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”

Swift, who has remained apolitical for most of her career, broke her silence on politics in an Instagram post on Sunday, endorsing former Democratic Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen over Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) in the state’s Senate race.

“As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn,” Swift wrote. “I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives.”

Swift also said that Blackburn’s voting record “appalls and terrifies” her.

Media editor for the conservative publication, The Daily Caller, Amber Athey said Swift’s comments were disappointing and called for celebrities to keep their political views to themselves.

“I was just so disappointed because I’m the type of person that doesn’t really like when celebrities get political whether they’re conservative or Democrat, either way, I wish they would just stay out of it,” Athey told Hill.TV.
