Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) slammed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for what he called “massive conflicts of interests” in an interview that aired Friday on “Rising.”
“I think he’s got massive conflicts of interests,” Biggs, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, told Hill.TV’s Alison Spann on Thursday.
“He manipulated and helped facilitate giving [special counsel Robert] Mueller the Russia investigation probe. He won’t give us the scope letter, but we know one thing: he hasn’t done a good job overseeing the Mueller investigation, and that’s why this has gone on as long as it has,” he continued.
Bigg’s comments came shortly before the chairmen and ranking members of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees announced on Thursday that Rosenstein would appear before the panels next week.
Lawmakers have expressed interest in interviewing Rosenstein over a New York Times report last month that said he had considered wearing a wire to record President Trump in the Oval Office and discussed invoking the 25th Amendment in an effort to remove Trump from office.
The Justice Department and Rosenstein have denied the story, and other news organizations have reported the comments were made as a joke.
Rosenstein is overseeing the federal investigation into Russia’s election meddling and has come under fire from House conservatives for his handling of the probe.
Rosenstein had given an interview to The Wall Street Journal earlier this week in which he called the Russia probe “appropriate and independent.”
Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) on Thursday called on Rosenstein to resign immediately before he agreed to testify before the House panels next week.
