Vice President Pence said in an interview with Hill.TV on Friday that the reimposition of the last set of sanctions lifted under the Iran nuclear deal will be part of the most punitive sanctions the country has ever faced.
“The sanctions that are being reimposed are following through on the promise that the president made,” Pence told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton.
“We also imposed additional sanctions, and now when all of these sanctions return and take effect, Iran will be under the most punitive sanctions they have ever faced,” he continued.
“Our hope is, as we continue to work with allies across the region, we continue to make it clear to them their malign activities across the region, and around the world will no longer be tolerated, that we’ll hopefully see the kind of change in Iran’s behavior that the world has hoped for, for many years,” he said.
Pence’s comments follow the Trump administration’s announcement on Friday that the last round of sanctions on Iran that were lifted under the multination nuclear deal signed under President Obama’s administration will be reimposed next week.
“This part of the campaign about which we’re speaking today is simple: It is aimed at depriving the regime of the revenues that it uses to spread death and destruction around the world,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a call with reporters.
President Trump announced in May that he was withdrawing the U.S. from the deal, which he has called the “worst deal ever negotiated.”
Officials from the European Union, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany slammed the administration’s plans to reimpose the sanctions on Friday, saying the Iran deal is vital to global security.
