Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) spokesman Adam Hodge on Wednesday praised former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D) as a “home-run pick” to deliver the party’s response to President Trump’s State of the Union address next week.
During a panel discussion on “Rising,” Hodge said that Abrams represents “the voice and future of the party.”
“Democratic and African-American voters will be the linchpin and backbone of the Democratic Party, putting that voice out here in response to the president, having her as the face, I think is just a home-run pick,” he told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton.
The Democratic strategist added that he hopes that Abrams delivers the speech her home state of Georgia, “so she can match some of the theatre” of Trump’s speech.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced on Tuesday that Abrams will deliver Democrats’ response to Trump’s address, which was rescheduled for Feb. 5.
“She is just a great spokesperson, she’s an incredible leader, she has led the charge for voting rights, which is at the root of just about everything else,” Schumer told reporters.
Abrams lost a hotly contested race to Brian Kemp (R) in November, when she won more than 48 percent of the vote.
She is now reportedly weighing a potential Senate run.
Earlier this month, The Hill reported that Abrams has meet with Democrats, including Schumer, to discuss a campaign against Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) in 2020.
