Conservative activist Matt Schlapp jabbed at the Trump campaign’s 2016 hires in an interview with Hill.TV on Tuesday, saying President Trump has hired “some stinkers.”
“He has some great people, he also had some stinkers,” Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union, told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”
Schlapp suggested that the campaign needed a better Human Resources director.
“He could have stopped a lot of these shenanigans. It is a fair criticism of the Trump campaign to say that there were people associated with it who had a lot of baggage,” he said.
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian election meddling has zeroed in on a number of Trump’s former campaign associates, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former adviser George Papadopoulos, and most recently, longtime ally Roger Stone.
Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, is set to report to prison in May to serve a three-year sentence for charges related to the Southern District of New York’s investigation. He will testify for three days on Capitol Hill this week.
Reports have surfaced that Cohen will discuss Trump’s alleged role in some of the crimes to which Cohen pleaded guilty to last year.
Schlapp’s comments come ahead of the annual Conservative Political Actional Committee, at which Trump is slated to speak.
Trump has spoken at the conservative gathering, which is organized by Schlapp, multiple times before.
