Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) slammed Michael Cohen ahead of his testimony on Wednesday before Congress, saying President Trump’s former personal attorney cannot be trusted.
“They should just look at the source, the guy has pled guilty to lying to the IRS, he’s pled guilty to filling out false documents for bank loans,” Green told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton. “This guy even lied about delivering his own child — his wife had to correct the record on that.”
“The truth is not in this guy, I’m not sure he would recognize it if he saw it, so it’s all about the source,” he added.
The Republican lawmaker, who also serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform committee, said he expects Cohen’s testimony before Congress to be “incredibly outrageous.”
Cohen began his three-day testimony before the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee, describing Trump as a “racist,” a “conman” and a “cheat.”
According to a copy of his prepared statement, he also is expected to claim that Trump knew that Roger Stone knew communicated with WikiLeaks about the releases of hacked Democratic emails during the 2016 election.
This isn’t the first time Green has criticized Cohen’s testimony. He attacked Democrats on Tuesday for even giving the former Trump attorney a platform in the first place.
“If Michael Cohen can’t be trusted to give an honest testimony, how can Democrats be trusted to conduct fair and honest oversight of the President?” he tweeted.
Cohen pleaded guilty to several federal crimes last year, including lying about abandoning a project for a Trump Tower in Moscow in January 2016. He later back tracked on those claims, admitting that he continued to pursue the proposal for months.
But on Tuesday he insisted that he was coming clean.
“I really appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to clear the record and to tell the truth and I look forward to tomorrow to being able to in my voice to tell the American people my story,” Cohen told reporters at the time.
