Journalist Glenn Greenwald said Tuesday that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro could be a “good partner” for President Trump on the international stage.
“If you think that the U.S. should go back to kind of the Monroe Doctrine as [national security adviser] John Bolton talked openly about, and ruling Latin America, and U.S. interests, Bolsonaro’s a really good partner for Trump,” Greenwald, co-founding editor of The Intercept, told Hill.TV hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton.
“He has kind of a subservient posture to the U.S. He loves Trump. His movement loves the Trump movement. They’ve modeled themselves after them,” he continued.
“Trump could get military bases, as Bolsonaro has already agreed to do. They could use Brazil as a staging ground for mischief in Venezuela. They can work together because Brazil is a crucial trading partner as well for China,” he added.
“Pragmatically, there definitely are ways that Bolsonaro and Trump could work together, and probably will work together, notwithstanding all of their very serious flaws. Practically speaking, there are reasons for them to work together,” Greenwald said.
The Brazilian leader, nicknamed by some as the “Trump of the Tropics,” has been compared to his U.S. counterpart frequently due to their right-wing stances and populist rhetoric.
Trump is slated to meet with Bolsonaro on Tuesday, and the two are expected to position themselves as allies in combating socialism around the globe during a scheduled press conference.
