A conservative business leader told Hill.TV on Monday that liberals did a better job in “messaging” on President Trump’s tax cuts than Republicans did.
“Frankly, the left did do a good job of … messaging on this one,” Job Creators Network (JCN) President Alfredo Ortiz told hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”
“I think part of the problem is that because the tax tables were changed throughout the year so that more people were really paying into the government — basically giving these interest-free loans, as we like to call them, to the government along the way — they did get smaller tax refunds at the end of the year. But that’s because all along the way, they were making less contributions,” he continued.
The tax filing deadline is Monday in most states, marking the first time Americans are submitting their returns under a full year of Trump’s 2017 tax law.
Recent surveys show that few people said they believe they paid less in taxes last year, but political analysts estimate that the majority of Americans got a tax cut over the course of last year.
Republican lawmakers and administration officials have touted the tax-cut law, arguing economic data shows that it has benefited the middle class.
But nearly half of Americans have a negative view of the law, according to polling.
A Pew Research Center survey conducted late last month found that 36 percent of respondents said they approved of the law, while 49 percent say they disapproved of the measure.
