Former Trump administration official Sebastian Gorka is calling for renewed attention to detention facilities along the U.S. southern border as a part of the Trump administration’s immigration policy.
“We have to get serious about the detention facilities,” Gorka told Hill.TV hosts Juanita Tolliver and Buck Sexton on Thursday.
“The idea that the Democrats have forcibly put a limit on how many people we can hold, which means we have to bus illegal aliens into cities, and just release them, that’s like a bad ‘SNL’ skit from when ‘SNL’ was actually funny,” the former deputy assistant to the president continued.
Reports surfaced earlier this month that President Trump is interested in sending immigrants apprehended at the border to the “sanctuary cities” — those where local authorities do not cooperate with federal immigration officials — in an effort to punish Democrats for their immigration policies, a move critics call wasteful, dangerous and possibly illegal.
“This system is broken. This president wants to fix it. So, wall, resources, and the capacity to determine straight away, ‘Is this person lying about being an asylum seeker or are they really in danger?’ Those are the three big things,” Gorka said.
Trump has pushed for stricter immigration policies in recent months, declaring a national emergency earlier this year to circumvent Congress and secure funding to build a wall along the southern border.
