Jason Miller — a former adviser to President Trump — told Hill.TV on Tuesday that Republicans will need better messaging on health care going into the 2020 presidential election.
“Until the Republicans come up with a real plan, then I don’t think ultimately this is going to go anywhere,” Miller, managing director at advisory firm Teneo, said on “Rising.”
“I look back at when President Trump was sworn-in [in] 2017, and [former Speaker] Paul Ryan [(R-Wis.)] and [Senate Majority] Leader [Mitch] McConnell [(R-Ky.)] should have been standing there with ‘here is your repeal and replace plan. We’ve gone through, we’ve tested it, it’s been [Congressional Budget Office] CBO scored. We’re ready to go on this thing,'” he continued. “But the fact of the matter is there isn’t a real plan right now.”
“We’re on an unsustainable spending path, and ObamaCare is collapsing under its own weight, and Republicans will need to have a much better message on health care going into 2020,” he said.
Miller previously served as a senior communications adviser to Trump’s 2016 campaign and as the communications director for the president’s transition team.
Trump and other Republican candidates campaigned heavily on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, in past elections.
However, once the party took control of Congress and the White House, it was unable to fulfill that campaign promise.
Democrats, in turn, campaigned on health care in the 2018 midterm elections and ended up taking back the House from Republicans.
