Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) on Thursday told Hill.TV that House Democrats are engaging more in “harassment than oversight” in their treatment of President Trump.
“I’m disappointed by the House’s actions,” Blunt said in an interview. “I think there’s more harassment than oversight going on, and even Nancy Pelosi seems to have agreed that the better thing to do is to legislate rather than to investigate. You can’t expect the president to hear that diatribe all day every day and not have a reaction.”
Blunt’s comments came a day after Trump blasted Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the White House Rose Garden after a failed meeting on infrastructure.
Trump said he will not be able to work with Democrats on a potential infrastructure package if they continue to investigate him and his administration.
Pelosi accused Trump of participating in a “cover up” ahead of the Wednesday meeting. Trump later said, “I don’t do coverups.”
The fallout from the contentious meeting spilled over into Thursday with Trump, Pelosi, and Schumer all trading barbs on Twitter, cable TV and in press conferences.
Pelosi told reporters she hopes that Trump’s staff or family would have an “intervention” for him, and reiterated that she prayed for the president.
Schumer said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that Democrats “came out better” than Trump after Wednesday’s meeting.
Trump, meanwhile, tweeted that he was calm during the meeting with Democrats. He also said it is not possible for Democrats “to investigate and legislate at the same time.”
