Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright on Wednesday called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) comments that Republicans would fill a Supreme Court seat in 2020 if one became open a “blessing for Democrats.”
“This is a blessing for Democrats,” Seawright, who is president and CEO of Blueprint Strategy, told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on “Rising.”
“When we have the power again, we should ram and jam everything we need to because if this is the game they’re going to play, we should play the same game,” he continued.
McConnell drew backlash from Democrats in 2016 when he refused to give then-President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, a vote or a hearing.
His reversal on the issue ahead of 2020 garnered backlash from Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who called McConnell a “hypocrite.”
A spokesman for McConnell noted that both the Senate and White House will be controlled by Republicans in 2020, unlike 2016.
