Hill.TV’s Saagar Enjeti: ‘Woke cultural left’ could complicate Sanders’s economic message

Hill.TV host Saagar Enjeti is warning that Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt) recent endorsements from Hollywood could complicate his economic message.

“Sanders’s economic populist message appeals across the ideological spectrum but the one thing that would hold him back is his current witting alliance with the woke cultural left,” Enjeti said Friday.

“Donald Trump is a cultural president,” he added. “If Bernie Sanders wants to beat him he needs to be an economic one.”

Sanders, along with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), has made taking on the nation’s wealthiest Americans and corporations a centerpiece of his campaign.

Last October, the Vermont senator released a plan that would prevent companies from using offshore tax havens and would raise the corporate tax rate from 21 percent to 35 percent. He has also proposed increasing tax rates for companies with a significant pay gap between their CEO and median workers.

Enjeti’s comments come after model Emily Ratajkowski threw her support behind Sanders’s 2020 campaign on Thursday.

In a video announcing the endorsement, Ratajkowski highlighted Sanders’s support of women’s rights.

“It’s very important to have someone who advocates for women’s rights in a position of power,” she said. “Bernie has always been very clear about how he advocates for women’s health care, which is hugely important to me.”

Ratajkowski previously endorsed Sanders in the 2016 primary. Like many of his 2020 contenders, Sanders has received a number endorsement from prominent Hollywood celebrities, including filmmaker Michael Moore, actor Mark Ruffalo and actress Susan Sarandon.
