The number of Independent voters who think that the media coverage of President Trump’s impeachment trial is biased has dropped significantly over the last few months, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released on Friday.
Of those polled, 40 percent of independents said the media’s coverage of Trump’s impeachment, specifically his ongoing trial in the Senate, was biased against the president. This marks a 10-point drop from a similar poll conducted in November when House Democrats were still conducting their impeachment inquiry.
Another 14 percent of independent respondents thought the coverage was actually biased in favor of the president, while 45 percent said there was no biased either way.
Republicans were more inclined to say that that the media’s coverage was biased. Sixty-three percent of GOP respondents came to that conclusion, compared to 28 percent of Democrats.
Trump and his Republican allies have frequently ripped the media’s coverage of the Democratic-led impeachment process, claiming that the media hasn’t been covering the event fairly.
The survey comes as the Senate trial draws to a close.
Republicans in the upper chamber are expected to move towards acquitting Trump on two charges: abuse of power concerning his Ukraine dealings and obstruction of Congress.
The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted among 1,001 registered voters between Jan. 30-31. The sampling margin of error is plus or minus 5.8 percentage points for independent voters, 5.5 percentage points for Republican voters and 5.1 percentage points for Democratic voters.
