Sanders press secretary: ‘Milquetoast’ candidate like Bloomberg won’t defeat Trump

Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) national press secretary hammered former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday, arguing the billionaire candidate would not be able to defeat President Trump in a general election.

In an interview, Briahna Joy Gray told Hill.TV hosts Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball that Bloomberg’s campaign lacked the on-the-ground enthusiasm necessary to win in November.

“You cannot ignore the fact that Bernie Sanders has the fundraising engine that can keep us going all the way, and actually compete with someone like Donald Trump who has all the lobbyists’ and special interests’ money at his back,” Gray said.

“You can’t compete with the MAGA hat-wearing crew if you are a milquetoast candidate like Michael Bloomberg,” she added.

Her comments come after Bloomberg was sharply criticized by every Democrat onstage during Wednesday’s presidential debate in Las Vegas, just days ahead of the Nevada caucuses and the former mayor’s first appearance on the debate stage since jumping into the race in late November.

During the debate, Bloomberg faced tough questions from fellow Democrats such as Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) over his earlier support of stop and frisk, as well as workplace issues at his company, Bloomberg L.P.
